Origins

This idea originally grew from my interest in studio models, design, and formative approaches. I was asked to speak at an event for a local group of Instructional Designers, and I wanted to provide something special for them to experience, that would also serve as an “Object To Think With” (in the sense of Seymour Papert).

Design Overview

In essence, the learners build something, share it with the group, engage in collaborative critique, and then reflect on how they might improve their efforts in the future. This experience is always engaging, and everyone tends to walk away with a new understanding and appreciation. It also builds trust and collaboration among participants.

Summary

The session has seen great success in both face-to-face and online settings, although the online setting sometimes presents unique challenges to the collaborative critique.  

I have created two versions of the exercise, which focus on different tasks. Below are slides from a recent presentation on the process.
